Abstract

In order to recognize a binary word in the bit stream in the form of light pulses in a light guide, the incoming light signals are distributed over a number of light guides, the number being equal to the number of bits of the word to be recognized. The light guides have a length graded in unit steps according to the bit spacing in the bit stream, so that the delay in each light guide is equal to the distance of the bit assigned to this light guide from the last bit of the word. The ends of the bit guides of one bit value are passed to a photodetector, and the ends of the remaining light guides are passed to a second photodetector, and a differential amplifier determines the difference between the two output signals. The word is recognized at the maximum difference.
