Abstract

Granules of silicic acid having an average particle size of 0.5 to 50 (Alpha) m, containing particles of primary silicic acid, of average size between 1 and 100 nm, are used as excipient for dental masses based on of polymerizable unsaturated ethylenic monomers. The reinforced excipient is practically colorless and can be mixed in large quantities with the polymerizable monomeric masses, in particular with the mono- and di-, polyfunctional esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid, respectively; it gives a plastic, shapeable and deformable dough. If necessary, the silicic acid granules are used with microfine, non-granular silicic acid, having an average particle size of 1 to 100 nm. The forms obtained after hardening of the polymerisable masses with the excipients are indicated by a higher pressure resistance, a weak thermal expansion, a high color stability and a weak bygroscopy and allow themselves to be finely polished. The excipients obtained generally lend themselves to preparations for filling and restoring teeth as well as for preparing artificial teeth.
