Abstract

Abstract A body-implantable therapy device capable of automatically effecting relatively traumatic therapy, for example, an electric defibrillating shock to a patient's heart, in response to the apparent existence of a life-threatening condition, for example, ventricular fibrillation, requiring such therapy. In order to reduce the incidence of inappropriate treatment by such an automatic therapy device, the device generates a patient alert signal when the condition apparently occurs or exists, and allows the patient to determine what course of action the device should take. in a preferred embodiment, the therapy proceeds automatically after a suitable time delay in the absence of intervention by the patient to interrupt the therapy by actuating a control circuit. For receiving an interrupt signal from the patient, the control circuit may include a magnetically operable reed switch. In a further embodiment of this invention, the control circuit operates to initiate or to actuate the therapy device. More specifically, the patient senses the patient alert signal and has an opportunity within a predetermined time to operate the control circuit to effect therapy by the therapy device.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 78 words
A body-implantable therapy device which comprises: body function monitoring means for generating a signal indicating the apparent existence of a condition requiring therapy; means for alerting a patient in response to a signal from said monitoring means; means for administering therapy appropriate for the condition; and control means operable by the patient to a first mode for controlling said therapy means to administer therapy and to a second mode for controlling said therapy means to not administer therapy.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 78 words
A body-implantable therapy device which comprises: body function monitoring means for generating a signal indicating the apparent existence of a condition requiring therapy; means for alerting a patient in response to a signal from said monitoring means; means for administering therapy appropriate for the condition; and control means operable by the patient to a first mode for controlling said therapy means to administer therapy and to a second mode for controlling said therapy means to not administer therapy.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 46 words
A body-implantable therapy device according to claim 1, which further comprises: memory means for effecting said therapy means a predetermined time after said monitoring means generates the therapy condition signal to administer therapy to the patient if said control means is operative in its first mode.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 86 words
A body-implantable automatic therapy device which comprises: body function monitoring means for generating a signal indicating the apparent existence of a condition requiring therapy; triggerable means for administering therapy appropriate for the condition; time delay means for triggering said therapy means a predetermined time after said monitoring means generates a signal; patient alert means responsive to signals from said monitoring means for alerting a patient to imminent operation of said therapy means; and interrupt means operable by the patient for inhibiting operation of said therapy means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 86 words
A body-implantable automatic therapy device which comprises: body function monitoring means for generating a signal indicating the apparent existence of a condition requiring therapy; triggerable means for administering therapy appropriate for the condition; time delay means for triggering said therapy means a predetermined time after said monitoring means generates a signal; patient alert means responsive to signals from said monitoring means for alerting a patient to imminent operation of said therapy means; and interrupt means operable by the patient for inhibiting operation of said therapy means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
A body-implantable automatic therapy device according to claim 3, wherein said interrupt means includes a magnetically operated switch for receiving a command from the patient to inhibit operation of said therapy means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 33 words
A body-implantable automatic therapy device according to claim 3, wherein said interrupt means includes an electromagnetic field responsive device for receiving a command from the patient to inhibit operation of said therapy means.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 91 words
A body-implantable automatic cardioverting device which comprises: heart function monitoring means for generating a signal indicating the apparent existence of a life-threatening arrhythmic condition; cardioversion means for administering a cardioverting shock to the heart when triggered; time delay means for triggering said cardioversion means a predetermined time after said monitoring means generates the arrhythmic condition signal; patient alert means responsive to signals from said monitoring means for alerting a patient to imminent operation of said cardioversion means; and interrupt means operable by the patient for inhibiting operation of said cardioversion means.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 32 words
A body-implantable automatic cardioverting device according to claim 6, wherein said interrupt means includes a magnetically operated switch for receiving a command from the patient to inhibit operation of said cardioversion means.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 33 words
A body-implantable automatic cardioverting device according to claim 6, wherein said interrupt means includes an electromagnetic field responsive device for receiving a command from the patient to inhibit operation of said cardioversion means.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 76 words
Apparatus implanted within a patient's body for administering therapy to the patient, said apparatus comprising: (a) body function monitoring means for generating a signal indicating the existence of a condition requiring therapy; (b) means for providing a manifestation to the patient in response to the therapy condition signal; (c) means for administering therapy to the patient appropriate for the condition; and (d) patient operable means for initiating said therapy means to administer therapy to said patient.
Claim 13
