Herbicidal benzene- and pyridine-sulfonamide derivatives

Claim 2

A compound selected from wherein R 1 is R 3 S(O] n ; R 3 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 3 -C 4 alkenyl, cyclopentyl or cyclopropylmethyl; R 2 is H, F, Cl, Br, CH 3 , OCH 3 , CF 3 , NO 2 , CN or NH 2 ; n is 0, 1 or 2; W is 0 or 5; T is CH or N; Z is CH or N; X is CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , OCH 3 , OC 2 H 5 ,-or CH 2 OCH 3 ; and Y is CH 3 or OCH 3 ; and their agriculturally suitable salts; provided that (1) when R 2 is CN, then T is CH and R 2 is not ortho to the sulfonylurea group; (2) when W is S, then n is 0 or 2; (3) when T is N, then n is 2; and (4) when T is CH, then R 3 is not C 1 -C 2 alkyl and R 1 is at the 2- or 4- position.

Claim 3

A compound of Claim 1 wherein W is 0 and R2 is H, F, Cl. Br, CH 3 or OCH 3 .

Claim 4

A compound of Claim 2 wherein R 1 is at the 2- or 4- position when T is N.

Claim 5

A compound of Claim 3 wherein n is 2.

Claim 6

A compound of Claim 4 wherein R 2 is H.

Claim 7

A compound of Claim 5 wherein X is CH 3 or OC H 3 .

Claim 8

A compound of Claim 6 wherein R 3 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl.

A compound of claim 1 wherein R 1 is R 3 SO 2 ; R 3 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 3-4 alkenyl or cyclopentyl; R 2 is H, F, Cl, Br, CH 3 or OCH 3 ; and T is N:

A compound of claim 1 wherein.: and R 3 is C 3 or C 4 alkyl or alkenyl.

Claim 12

A composition suitable for controlling the growth of undesired vegetation which comprises an effective amount of a herbicidal compound and at least one of the following: surfactant, solid or liquid diluent, characterised in that said herbicidal compound comprises a compound of any of claims 1 to 10.

Claim 14

The method of claim 10 wherein said undesired vegetation is selectively controlled in the presence of crop plants.

Claim 16

A process for preparing a compound of claim 1 which comprises: (a) reacting together compounds of general formulae wherein R 1 is R 3 SO 2 or R 3 S R 2 is as defined in claim 1, other than NH 2 R 3 , T, W, X, Y and Z are as defined in claim 1; or (b) to prepare a compound of claim 1 wherein R 2 is NH 2 , reducing a corresponding compound wherein R 2 is NO 2 ; or (c) reacting together compounds of general formulae wherein R 1 is R 3 S or R 3 SO 2 and R 21 T, W, X, Y, and Z are as defined in claim 1; or (d) to prepare a compound of claim 1 wherein n is 1 and W is.0, oxidizing a corresponding compound wherein n is zero.
