Abstract

Abstract This disclosure relates to a sound absorbing arrangement for a power lawnmower in which sound absorbing material (40) is provided within the body of the lawnmower to reduce noise by attenuating resonance caused by the lawnmower motor (12). In addition to reducing noise, the sound absorbing material (40) imparts structural rigidity to the lawnmower body or housing (14), and also may be used to define air passages (50) within the lawnmower body for use in cooling the motor (12).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 71 words
In a power lawnmower comprising a motor (12) and a housing (14) substantially enclosing the motor, the improvement characterized in that a body of rigid sound absorbing material (40) is configured to substantially completely occupy the interior volume of said housing (14) between the motor (12) and the walls of said housing (14) so as to reduce the noise level of said lawnmower while providing additional structural support for said housing.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 71 words
In a power lawnmower comprising a motor (12) and a housing (14) substantially enclosing the motor, the improvement characterized in that a body of rigid sound absorbing material (40) is configured to substantially completely occupy the interior volume of said housing (14) between the motor (12) and the walls of said housing (14) so as to reduce the noise level of said lawnmower while providing additional structural support for said housing.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
The lawnmower of Claim 1 further characterized in that said body of sound absorbing material (40) is adhered to the interior surfaces of said housing (14) to dampen the resonances produced by said lawnmower.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 67 words
The lawnmower of Claim 1 wherein the walls of said housing (14) contain air inlet ports (30, 32) and said motor (12) includes means for drawing ambient air through said inlet ports (30, 32), further characterized in that said body of sound absorbing material (40) is further configured so as to define passages for channeling air drawn through said inlet ports (30, 32) around said motor (12).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
The lawnmower of Claim 3 further characterized by a layer of foil (44) for covering the surface of said body of sound absorbing material (40) defining said air passages.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 131 words
In a the power lawnmower of Claim 1 wherein the housing is a two-piece housing substantially enclosing said motor (12) comprising a lower chassis (16) portion having mounted thereto said motor (12) and a cover portion (18) adapted to be fitted over said chassis portion (16), the improvement further characterized in that the body of rigid sound absorbing material (40) is configured to conform to the interior surface contours of said chassis portion (16) such that when properly positioned within said chassis (16) said body of sound absorbing material (40) substantially completely occupies the interior volume of said chassis (16) between said motor (12) and the front and rear walls of said chassis (16), said body of sound absorbing material (40) being adhered to the interior surfaces of said chassis (16).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 67 words
The lawnmower of Claim 5 wherein the walls of said housing (14) contain air inlet ports (30, 32) and said motor (12) includes means for drawing ambient air through said inlet ports (30, 32), further characterized in that said body of sound absorbing material (40) is further configured so as to define passages for channeling air drawn through said inlet ports (30, 32) around said motor (12).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 120 words
In the power lawnmower of Claim 1 wherein the housing (14) has air inlets (30, 32) and said motor (12) includes means for drawing ambient air through said air inlets (30, 32), the improvement further characterized in that a body of rigid sound absorbing material (40) configured to mate with the interior contours of said housing (14) so that said body of sound absorbing material (40) substantially completely occupies the interior volume of said housing (14) to thereby provide structural support for said housing (14), said body of sound absorbing material (40) being adhered to said housing (14) and being further configured to define passages for directing cooling air drawn through said air inlets (30, 32) around said motor (12).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 28 words
The lawnmower of Claim 7 further characterized by a layer of foil (44) for covering the surface of said body of sound absorbing material (40) defining said passages.
