Abstract

Abstract A liquid filtering medium supply and extraction mechanism comprises a driven roller (42) for each sheet of filter media in combination with an adjacent, movable bar (60) having a series of spaced apart pinch wheels (62) mounted thereon for penetrating accumulated cake and filtered dirt on the media when an actuator moves them against the roller as the media is being advanced. The driven rollers (42) are mounted on separate bearing plates (70) which are movable in response to sensor signals (100) to steer the moving filter media and maintain its alignment with the filter plates. The supply section of the apparatus comprises a series of supports for supply rolls (30) of filter media provided with adjustable centering means (126) to help maintain proper alignment of the filter media between filter plates.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 233 words
A liquid filtering device comprising a plurality of filter plates (22) which, when placed together, form liquid containers, means (26) for moving said plates together for retaining elongated sheets of flexible filter media (30) between adjacent plates, thereby forming a pair of fluid-tight chambers on opposite sides of each sheet, therebeing an inlet (34) to one chamber and an outlet (36) to the opposite chamber on the other side of the sheet, and means (26) for separating the plates when the sheets of filter media are contaminated, and a sheet extraction and advancing means (32) for the various sheets of filter media adjacent the filtering device comprising: an elongated drive roller (42) for each sheet of filter media supported by a frame and extending generally perpendicular to the longitudinal centre line of the media and controllable power means for rotating each said drive roller characterised in that a bar (60) is located adjacent each said drive roller (42), therebeing a plurality of rotatable pinch wheels (62) mounted on said bar, at least said pinch wheels being freely rotatable, there being means (68) for urging each said bar towards its adjacent roller so that said pinch wheels will press against the filter media which is partially wrapped around said roller, thereby causing a frictional force between said roller and said media that is sufficient to advance the media when said power means is activated.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 233 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 47 words
A filtering device according to claim 1, characterised in that said pinch wheels (62) are circular discs with a central hub portion (64) that are axially adjustable on said bar, each said disc having a tapered peripheral edge (66) for penetrating accumulated filter cake on the media.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
A filtering device according to claim 1 or 2 characterised in that each said drive roller (42) has a knurled outer surface.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 121 words
A filtering device according to any one of the preceding claims characterised in that said drive roller (42) is a crown roll with a greater diameter at its middle than at its ends and further including a fixed bearing means (76) for supporting one end of each said drive roller (42) and a movable bearing means (76) for supporting the other end of said roller; and means (90) for adjusting the position of said movable -bearing means in order to vary the angular position of the roller axis relative to the fixed orientation of said adjacent filter plates to thereby keep the filter media centered on said roller and between the filter plates as it is advanced by said power means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 70 words
A filtering device according to claim 4 characterised in that said means (90) for adjusting the position of said movable bearing means comprises a media alignment sensing means (100) for providing signals when the media travel varies from a preselected path; linear actuator means (90) connected to said movable bearing means; and means (98) for operating said actuator means in response to signals provided by said media alignment sensing means.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 51 words
A filtering device according to claim 4 or 5 characterised in that said movable bearing means (76) comprises a movable mounting plate (70) on one side of said frame, a self-aligning bearing (76) fixed to said mounting plate, said actuator means having a movable arm (88) connected to such mounting plate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A filtering device according claim 6 characterised in that said movable bearing means comprises a slot (78) for retaining one end of said pinch wheel bar (60).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 51 words
A filtering device according to claim 6 or 7 characterised in that said means (68) for urging said bar towards its adjacent roller comprises a linearly movable member (80) engaging said bar and connected by linkage means (84) fixed to said bearing plate (70) and to a manually controllable handle (86).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 114 words
A filtering device according to any one of the preceding claims characterised in that filter media supply means -(28) is provided adjacent the opposite ends of said plurality of filter plates (22), said supply means comprising: a support frame having vertical frame members (110), fixed horizontal members (108) on one side and removable horizontal members (108) on its other side; a series of elongated supply roll support members (116) fixed at one end to said fixed horizontal members of said frame and supported at their other ends by said removable horizontal members; adjustable means (26) on each roll support member for supporting a roll of filter media in proper alignment with said filter plates.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 54 words
A filtering device according to claim 9 characterised in that said adjustable means (126) comprises a pair of annular retaining rings (124) with means (120,122) for attaching them at a fixed location along a said support member, and a conical collar (126) adjacent each said retaining ring for supporting a roll of filter media.
