Abstract

Abstract A material has at least its surface layer formed of the product obtained by acylation of a mixture of two or more chitin derivatives selected from compounds represented by theformula (1): wherein R represents a carboxyalkyl group of from two to four carbon atoms, a hydroxyethyl group, a hydroxypropyl group, a dihydroxypropyl group or an alkyl group of from one to three carbon atoms, is a number of 0.1 to 1.0, y = 1.0-x,a isa number of 0 to 1.0, and b = 1.0-a, and salts of said compounds of formula (1). Such a material can be prepared in the form of spherical particles, fibers or films. The material can be employed as an ion-exchanger, in blood perfusion, as an orally administrable adsorbent, as a coating material for adsorbents, as a filler for chromatographic columns, as a base material on which an enzyme, antibody or antigen is to be immobilised, or in the formation of a polyion with an anti-thrombogenicsubstance.
