Abstract

Abstract In a correction device for correcting byte-structured errors, a GMC code is used. For the purpose of decoding, the error syndromes are split area by area into two part syndromes which can be considered as elements alpha <i> of Galois fields GF(2<r>). The bits of the part-syndromes are used for addressing two read-only memories each which contain the exponents i of the coefficients alpha <i>. The modulo 2<r>-1 difference from the contents read out of the read-only memories due to a particular error syndrome directly specify the location of the faulty byte in purely binary coding. <IMAGE>
