Abstract

Abstract A 3-sheeled velociman having individual power transmission units (40) to each of the co-axial rear wheels (11,12). Power to the unit is supplied by a pair of hand actuated levers (50) each of which connects with an input shaft (41) to the respective unit via a ratchet mechanism (55) and transmits the power to the input shaft (41) in the desired forward or reverse rotational direction, depending on the position of a pawl engageable with the ratchet. A gear change switch (60) controls the forward, reverse or neutral position of the pawl and consequently the rotational direction of the input shaft (41). The switch (60) is adjacent the hand grip (53) of each hand lever (50) and so is easily operated by the user. The input shaft (41) drives an output shaft (42) on which the corresponding rear wheel (11,12) is mounted. The hand levers (50) are fulcrummed to the input shaft (41) below and to the rear of the seat (18) and lie at an acute angle to the horizontal making operation of the levers (50) by the user less tiring on the user's arms than on upright levers.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 136 words
An invalid vehicle in the form of a velociman of the kind stated in which the single wheel is capable of low friction rotatable movement relative to the frame, and each co-axial wheel is geared for drive through an individual transmission from a corresponding hand lever means located at the pertaining side of the seat to transmit the drive through hand control fore-and-aft arcuate pumping movement thereof, each hand lever means being fulcrummed at one end below the seat and extending to terminate in a hand grip at its other end, characterised in that the transmission (40) includes means permitting selective forward or reverse rotation of a drive output shaft (42) coupled to the co-axial wheels (11, 12) and a change control mechanism (60) is provided by which the user can select forward or reverse drive.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 136 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 95 words
An invalid vehicle as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that each hand lever is fulcrummed to a drive input shaft (41) which is geared to the drive output shaft (42) and each selective means includes a pawl and ratchet mechanism (55) the pawl of which is pivotally mounted on the hand lever (50, 51) to move therewith and the ratchet of which is fixedly mounted on the drive input shaft, said pawl being selectively engagable with the ratchet to provide rotation thereof in one direction only on movement of the hand lever (50, 51).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 58 words
An invalid vehicle as claimed in Claim 2, characterised in that said change control mechanism (60) comprises a switch (60) mounted adjacent the hand grip (53) and a rod or cable located within the hand lever (50, 51) and adapted to pivot the pawl between selected positions in which the pawl engages a ratchet of said mechanism (55).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
An invalid vehicle as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the hand lever (50,_51) is fulcrummed rearwardly of the seat (18) and extending forwardly at an acute angle to the horizontal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 41 words
An invalid vehicle as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4 characterised in that the hand levers (50, 51) during the pumping action move through an arc the upper limit of which is less than 90° to the horizontal.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 50 words
An invalid vehicle as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the seat (18) has support arms (64) which can be pivoted to a horizontal position and supported therein so that a user can mount or dismount by moving sideways on to or from the seat.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
An invalid vehicle substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
An invalid vehicle substantially as hereinbefore described, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
