Abstract
Abstract A dialysis composition for adsorption of uremic substances in an artificial kidney is described, comprising a cation exchanger suspended in a suspending agent, A more particular example of such a composition comprises a surface adsorptive agent capable of adsorption of uremic substances; an enzyme to serve as a catalyst for urea degradation; a suspending agent; and a cation exchanger capable of being suspended in said suspending agent. A method for removing uremic substances from blood during hemodialysis with the above dialysis compositions is also described.

Claim 4
Dependent Claim
45 words
A dialysis composition for use in an artificial kidney comprising-- a surface adsorptive agent capable of adsorption of uremic substances; an enzyme to serve as a catalyst for urea degradation; a suspending agent; and a cation exchanger capable of being suspended in said suspending agent.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
14 words
The dialysis composition of claims 1 or 2 wherein said cation exchanger is calcium-loaded.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
38 words
The dialysis composition of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said cation exchanger is loaded with 30 to 80 percent calcium, 20 to 50 percent sodium and 0 to 20 percent potassium on a molar basis.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
45 words
A method for removing uremic substances during hemodialysis comprising : providing a dialysis composition as defined in any one of claims 1 through 4; and exposing said dialysis composition to blood so that said composition adsorbs uremic substances from said blood to cleanse the same.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
59 words
The method of claim 5 for removing uremic substances during hemodialysis in an artificial kidney characterized by membranes between said dialysis composition and said blood to be cleansed with said method including bringing said dialysis composition into contact with one side of said membranes while said blood to be cleansed is in contact with other side of said membranes.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
17 words
The method of claims 5 or 6 wherein said dialysis composition includes a suspended calcium-loaded cation exchanger.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
44 words
The method of any one of claims 5 to 7 wherein said dialysis composition is a suspension wherein said cation exchanger is loaded with 30 to 80 percent calcium, 20 to 50 percent sodium, and 0 to 20 percent potassium on a molar basis.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
58 words
The method of any one of claims 6 to 8 wherein an artificial kidney having semi-permeable membranes a dialysis composition, as defined in claim 2, in suspension contacts one side of said membranes and the other side of said membranes is in contact with blood whereby uremic substances in said blood are withdrawn therefrom by said dialysis composition.
Claim 12
Independent Claim
39 words
The method of any one of claims 6 to 9 wherein C03 is developed during the urease reaction, and wherein both calcium and CO 3 = are returned to the blood while said uremic solutions are being withdrawn therefrom.
