Abstract
Abstract Herbicidal sulfonamides, and preparation and use thereof, the sulfonamides having the general formula <CHEM> wherein R1 is H, halogen, methyl, methoxy or nitro, R2 is NCO or various derivatives thereof, X and Z are methyl or various alkoxy groups, Y is CH or N. The compounds may be made e.g. by appropriate isocyanate/amine condensation reactions. They may be formulated for agricultural use in conventional manner and used as herbicides or plant growth regulants.

A compound of claim 1 wherein R 2 is - NR 6 R 7' -NCO, and R 6 and R 7 are independently H or alkyl of 1-3 carbon atoms.

A process for preparing a compound of claim 1 which comprises (A) reacting a m-isocyanatobenzenesulfonyl isocyanate of Formula II with a 2-aminopyrimidine or a 2-amino-1,3,5-triazine of Formula III: wherein R 1 , X, Y and Z are as defined in claim 1, and optionally reacting the end-product (I-A) with (i) an alcohol R 3 0H, (ii) a thiol R 3 SH or (iii) an amine NHR 4 R 5 , wherein R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are as defined in claim 1; or (B) hydrogenating an appropriately substituted nitrobenzenesulfonamide: to the corresponding amino compound: or (C) acylating aminobenzenesulfonamide (I-B) with (a) an acyl halide R 3 CO.X, (b) a carboxylic acid anhydride (R 3 CO) 2 0, (c) a carbamoyl halide, R 4 R 5 NCO.X, (d) an isocyanate R 5 NCO or (e) a haloformate R 3 ECO.X, wherein R 31 R 4 and R 5 are as defined in claim 1, X is halogen and E is oxygen or sulphur; or (D) alkylating an aminobenzenesulfonamide of general formula by reductive alkylation with the aldehyde R 3 CHO to form a compound of general formua wherein R 1 , R 3 , R 6 , R 7 , X, Y and Z are as defined in claim 1; or (E) reacting an appropriately substituted benzenesulfonylisocyanate of general formula with the appropriate 2-aminopyrimidine or 2-amino-1,3,5-triazine of general formula wherein R 1 , R 6 , R 7 , X, Y and Z are as defined in claim 1.
