Abstract

Abstract An electrical connector is formed from a lamina (1, 10) of elastomeric material having conductive tracks (2, 15) on one surface by folding the lamina and bonding opposed lamina portions together. The conductive tracks extend around the fold between contact portions (6) on opposite surfaces of the connector. Suitably the lamina is of thermoplastic material so that bonding is by fusion and the conductive tracks (15) may be flush with the connector surfaces. The connector is formed in a U-shaped nest (11) under pressure and the lamina (10) is formed about a core (12) of elastomeric material.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 100 words
A method of forming a connector having spaced contacts at surfaces of an elastomeric body, the contacts being interconnected in pairs or groups by conductive paths characterised by forming conductive paths 2 on a lamina 1 of elastomeric material, folding the lamina 1 in generally U-fashion with the conductive paths 2 externally of the fold to present opposed portions 3 of the lamina 1 extending from the fold with the conductive paths 2 extending from the fold along distal surfaces of opposed lamina portions 3 and around the fold, and bonding the proximal surfaces of the opposed portions 3 together.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 characterised in that the elastomeric lamina 1 is formed of a thermoplastic material and the opposed lamina portions 3 are fusion bonded.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the lamina 10 is folded about a body 12 of elastomeric material and the opposed lamina portions are bonded to the body 12.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 98 words
A method as claimed in claim 3 characterised in that the lamina 10 of elastomeric material is folded in a U-shaped mould nest 11 with the conductive paths facing the nest 11 and the body 12 of elastomeric material is urged into the next 11 against the lamina 10 and between the opposed lamina portions, the lamina 10 and body 12 then being heated under the urging pressure until fusion of the thermoplastic lamina 10 is effected, the lamina then being cooled to a set condition before release of the pressure and removal from the mould nest 11.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 characterised in that the body 12 of elastomeric material is of like thermoplastic nature to that of the lamina 10.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 53 words
A method as claimed in claim 4 characterised in that the body 12 of elastomeric material is urged into the mould nest 11 by a ram 13 of less width than that of the U-shapcd nest 11 of the ram 13 being slidable in a guide 14 overlapping sides of the nest 11.
Claim 8
