Abstract A spray deck (8) fitting as close to the canoeist as possible is used in canoes in order to avoid the ingress of water. In order to enable the canoeist to quickly leave the boat in the event of a capsize, the spray deck (8) has a fastener (10), preferably a velcro-type fastener, which opens automatically during the action of relatively large tensile forces. <IMAGE>
