Body cavity probes - non-inflammatory and easy to manipulate using a material for the tube with a thermally widely varying rigidit
Abstract
Abstract The probe tubing is flexible, yet sufficiently rigid to ensure proper insertion and is simply and economically constructed. The probe will not cause inflammation even when left in the body cavity for weeks. The probe can be easily manipulated and is especially useful for insertion into the oesophagus. The tube is highly flexible at the body temperature, but becomes rapidly rigid onslight cooling, e.g. rinsing with tap water. The preferred material is a plasticised PVC or polyethylene with a rigidity varying by 1/2 and order of magnitude between 0 - 40 degrees C. The tube is preferably of 3 mm. diameter with a wall thickness of 0.5 mm. and is coated with a body compatible material, e.g. a fluorinated hydrocarbon or a silicone.
