Abstract
Abstract Beta-hydroxyalkyl monoesters of mono-sec-alkyl maleates or fumarates prodn. Compounds having the formula: ROOC-CCH=CH-COOCH2-CH(OH)-R1 (in which R represents the residue of a secondary alcohol ROH containing 3-10C atoms; and R1 is H, and alkyl, aryl, or alkenyl) are produced by reacting a monoester of a secondary C3-10 alcohol and maleic or fumaric acid with an epoxide of the formula at 35-160 degrees C in the presence of a Fe (III) compound. These compounds are used in the production of copolymers with vinyl compounds, which can be crosslinked and may have adhesive properties.
