Abstract

Abstract SINK STRAINER ABSTRACT A sink strainer is disclosed of the kind that alternatively holds a sealing washer out of sealing engagement with the sink, for straining, or engages the sealing washer to plug the sink. In place of the conventional springy steel stem, a plastic stem is disclosed. The stem has a tongue that is slotted to define two arms: the arms are resilient and the resilience is used to hold the strainer firmly plugged. The plastic stem is a one-piece moulding of chunky, robust, shape. DELRIN 100 is the preferred material.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 218 words
Sink strainer, comprising a strainer basket and, attached to the basket, a stem which protrudes downwards below the basket for engagement with a hole in a sink; where the stem is a single unitary flat moulding of plastic material having substantially constant thickness throughout its length, and includes a through slot that extends through the thickness of said stem and partway along its axial length, so as to define an undivided body portion and a divided body portion thereof; where said divided portion has two arms, one on either side of said through-slot; where said through-slot does not extend to the bottom of said plastic stem, so that said arms are joined by a bridging portion at the bottom of said plastic stem; where said arms are resilient and deflectable towards each other, said through-slot being wide enough to permit such deflection; where the outside profile of at least said divided portion includes a bulge located above said bridging portion partway along the length of said divided portion, and upper and lower tapering portions, respectively, above and below said bulge; where the taper angle of the upper tapering portion is, in substance, less than the taper angle of the lower tapering portion; and where both tapering portions blend smoothly and gradually and without sudden demarcation into said bulge.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 218 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
Strainer of claim 1, where the basket has a hole, and a fastening means is provided for tightening the stem fast to the material of the basket around the hole.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 61 words
Strainer of claim 2, where the body portion of the stem is provided with a flange and a spigot which, together with a surface of the basket, define a groove for the reception and retention of a sealing washer; and where the stem is so shaped that the body portion blends smoothly into the flange with no abrupt change in section,
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 67 words
Strainer of claim 3, where the fastening means include a male-threaded stalk moulded integrally in the plastic stem, and the stalk protrudes upwards from the body portion through a central hole in the basket, and also includes a female-threaded hand grip member, which is so shaped and located as to lend itself to being gripped by a person, for the purpose of inserting and withdrawing the strainer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
Strainer of claim 4, where the taper angle of the upper tapering portion is much less than the taper angle of the lower tapering portion.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
Strainer of claim 5, where the taper angle of the upper tapering portion is about 5 degrees, and the taper angle of the lower tapering portion is about 30 degrees.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
Strainer of claim 1, where an arm has a substantially square cross sectional shape.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 13 words
Strainer of claim 7, where the stem is symmetrical about a vertical axis.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 45 words
Strainer of claim 8, where the stem is provided with a tag which extends downwards below the bridging portion, the tag having about the same width as the thickness of the tongue, and arranged so that the undersurface of the bridging portion comprises a ledge.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 28 words
Strainer of claim 8, where the thickness of the tongue is about 4.5 mm, and the tongue has a maximum width at the bulge of about 12 mm.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 27 words
Strainer of claim 10, where the outside cross-sectional shape of the tongue (in a plane at right angles to the axis) at the bulge is a circle.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 143 words
Strainer of claim 8, where the fastening means includes a male-threaded stalk moulded integrally in the plastic stem, and the stalk protrudes upwards from the body portion through a central hole in the basket, and also includs a female-threaded handle member, which is so shaped and located as to lend itself to being gripped by a person for the purpose of inserting and withdrawing the strainer; where the taper angle of the upper taper portion is around 5 degrees, and the taper angle of the lower tapering portion is around 30 degrees, and both tapering portions blend smoothly into the bulge; and where the stem is provided with a tag which extends downwards below the briding portion, the tag having about the same width as the thickness of the tongue, and arranged so that the undersurface of the bridging portion comprises a ledge.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 14 words
Strainer of claims 1, 2 or 3, where the plastic material is DELRIN 100.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 14 words
Strainer of claims 4, 5 and 6 where the plastic material is DELRIN 100.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 14 words
Strainer of claims 7, 8 or 9, where the plastic material is DELRIN 100.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 14 words
Strainer of claims 10, 11 of 12 where the plastic material is DELRIN 100.
