Abstract
Abstract P.C. 6397 Slit Catheter for Measuring Interstitial Pressure Abstract An interstitial tissue pressure measuring device comprising a cannula and a catheter, the catheter being adapted to pass through the cannula and the distal end of the catheter being provided with a plurality of longitudinal slits defining a plurality of petals between them. When the cannula is emplaced in an interstitual tissue site and the catheter is passed through the emplaced cannula into the tissue, the petals facilitate measurements of pressure by a pressure-sensing device at the proximal end of the catheter.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim
153 words
An apparatus for measuring interstitial tissue pressure comprising a cannula and a cylindrical catheter for reception of a physiologically compatible fluid, said catheter being adapted to pass through said cannula, the distal end of said catheter being provided with a plurality of longitudinal slits defining a plurality of petals between them, said petals being capable of expanding radially to form an obtuse angle with the adjacent catheter wall, and said catheter and said cannula being provided with interlocking means at the proximal ends thereof such that said cannula can be maintained in a circumferential position about the proximal portion of said catheter, whereby when said cannula is emplaced in said tissue, and said catheter being filled with said fluid is passed through said emplaced cannula to insert said catheter into said tissue, said petals expand radially to facili-tate measurement of said pressure by a pressure-sensing device at the proximal end of said catheter.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
49 words
An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said cannula contains concentrically confined therein a needle having the acutely beveled pointed end thereof extending distally from said cannula and the proximal end thereof adapted to fit snugly into the interlocking means located at the terminal end of said can-nula.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
17 words
An apparatus as defined in claim 1 or 2 wherein said interlocking means are plastic male-female adaptors.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
15 words
An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said catheter is composed of polyethylene tubing.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
44 words
An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the number of said slits is about 2 to 8, the length of said slits is from about 2 to 8 mm, and the length of said catheter is from about 20 cm to 35 cm.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
34 words
An apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein the number of said slits is 5, the length of said slits is about 4 mm and the length of said catheter is about 25 cm.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
22 words
An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the obtuse angle formed by said expanded petals is about 160 to 170 degrees.
