Abstract
Abstract ABSTRACT AXIAL LEAD HEAT SINK A heat sink adaptable for insertion into the plated through holes of a printed circuit (pc) assembly and for re-ceiving and cooling axial lead circuit components contained within the pc mounting collar of the heat sink. The heat sinks being contained by compressive stress during initial assembly; and the heat sinks and axial leads of the components later being wave soldered to the pc assembly.

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
99 words
A heat sink comprising: a cylindrical mounting collar adaptable for in-sertion into a through hole in a pc assembly, having a slot formed therein for ensuring a compressive connection to said pc assembly upon insertion into the pc assembly and having an opening therethrough sufficient to receive an axial lead of a heat generating device; and a planar radiating fin formed as an extension of said mounting collar and extending away from said pc assembly and having a substantially large planar surface area for radiating heat generated within said heat generating device to the environment surrounding said heat sink.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
65 words
A heat sink as set forth in claim 1 including a stop ring, intermediary to said mounting collar and said radiating fin, formed in said mounting collar of a radius greater than that of said mounting collar for engaging a sur-face of said pc assembly upon insertion of said heat sink and limiting the depth of insertion of said heat sink into said pc assembly.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
51 words
A heat sink as set forth in claim 2 including a raised section intermediary to said stop ring and said planar radiating fin for providing a transition from said cylindrical shape of said mounting collar to said planar shape of said radiating fin and providing mechanical rigidity to said radi-ating fin.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
71 words
A heat sink as set forth in claim 1 or 3 wherein said planar radiating fin includes elongated radial flanges formed on each side of said radiating fin, each flange extending inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of said mounting collar and so that said radiating fin has an elliptic appearance when viewed in orthogonal cross section with respect to said longitudinal axis, thereby increasing the surface area of said radiating fin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
63 words
A heat sink as set forth in claim 1 or 3 wherein the planar surface of said radiating fin has a series of alternating ridges and valleys formed therein, so that said radiating fin has a corrugated appearance when viewed in orthogonal cross section with respect to the longitudinal axis of said mounting collar, thereby increasing the surface area of said radiating fin.
