Abstract

Abstract Abstract of the Disclosure Acoustic well logging method and system employing a bender-type transducer as a point source of an acoustic shear wave. The bender-type transducer includes opposed unrestricted planar surfaces mounted within a liquid filled compartment within the tool. The unrestricted surfaces of the transducer are spaced longitudinally along the axis of the tool and exposed to the coupling liquid. One or more bender-type transducers may also be employed as acoustic receivers in the tools. The active surfaces of the receiving transducers are oriented in substantially the same direction as the active surfaces of the transmitting transducer.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 124 words
In an acoustic well logging system, the combination comprising: (a) an elongated logging tool adapted for insertion into a borehole and including a compartment which contains a coupling liquid and has opposed unrestricted openings, (b) an acoustic transmitter mounted in the compartment and comprising a bender-type transducer having opposed unrestricted planar surfaces oriented along the longitudinal axis of the tool in line with said opposed unrestricted openings and exposed to said coupling liquid, (c) means for exciting said transmitter simultaneously to flex said opposed surfaces in a conforming manner and generate a positive pressure wave in one direction while simultantously generating a negative pressure wave in the opposite direction, and (d) an acoustic receiver mounted in said tool and spaced longitudinally from said transmitter.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 124 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
The system of claim 1 wherein said receiver comprises a bender-type transducer having opposed unrestricted planar surfaces oriented in substantially the same direction as said transmitting transducer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 97 words
125 3. In the acoustic loggins of a liquid filled well penetrating a subterranean formation, the method comprising: (a) locating within said well a bender-type transducer having opposed unrestricted planar surfaces oriented along the axis of said well, (b) simultaneously flexing said opposed surfaces in a conforming manner to generate in said liquid and in the adjacent formation an acoustic signal comprised of a positive pressure wave in one direction and a simultaneous negative pressure wave in the opposite direction, and (c) detecting said acoustic signal at a location spaced longitudinally along said well from said transducer.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 97 words

Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
The method of claim 3 wherein said acoustic signal is detected by means of a bender-type transducer having opposed unrestricted planar surfaces oriented in substantially the same direction as said first recited transducer.
