Abstract

Abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and apparatus for producing embossed lines which are without corrugations and can be applied to polyolefine foils. The foil is passed between a heated embossing tool and a perforated platen, the embossing tool pressing the foil onto the perforated platen by means of embossing electrodes. The depth of penetration thereof into the foil amounts to at least 40% of the thickness thereof. The foil is held flat upon the perforated platen by means of a vacuum in the latter throughout the embossing and cooling cycles.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 80 words
A process for thermally embossing fold lines in a synthetic foil, comprising the steps of: supporting the foil on a perforated platen; creating in said perforated platen a vacuum to draw one side of the foil flat thereagainst while penetrating the other side of the foil to a predetermined depth with a heated embossing tool; and allowing the foil to cool as said vacuum is applied thereto; said predetermined depth being at least 40% of the thickness of the foil.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 80 words
A process for thermally embossing fold lines in a synthetic foil, comprising the steps of: supporting the foil on a perforated platen; creating in said perforated platen a vacuum to draw one side of the foil flat thereagainst while penetrating the other side of the foil to a predetermined depth with a heated embossing tool; and allowing the foil to cool as said vacuum is applied thereto; said predetermined depth being at least 40% of the thickness of the foil.
Claim 3
Independent Claim 85 words
A method of thermally embossing fold lines in a synthetic foil, comprising the steps of: supporting the foil on a perforated platen; heating an embossing tool to a temperature in the range between about 200°C to about 300°C; Penetrating one side of the foil to a predetermined depth with said heated embossing tool while drawing the other side of said foil flat against said perforated platen; and allowing the foil to cool; said predetermined depth being at least 40% of the thickness of the foil.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 85 words
A method of thermally embossing fold lines in a synthetic foil, comprising the steps of: supporting the foil on a perforated platen; heating an embossing tool to a temperature in the range between about 200°C to about 300°C; Penetrating one side of the foil to a predetermined depth with said heated embossing tool while drawing the other side of said foil flat against said perforated platen; and allowing the foil to cool; said predetermined depth being at least 40% of the thickness of the foil.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method according to Claim 1, wherein said predetermined depth is in a range of 50% to about 80% of the thickness of the foil.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method according to Claim 1, 2 or 3 including the step of heating said perforated platen to a temperature in the range between about 20°C to about 60°C.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 42 words
An apparatus for thermally embossing fold lines in a synthetic foil comprising: an embossing tool; and a perforated platen, through which a vacuum can be applied; said perforated platen having an air-permeable coating, at least in the area facing the embossing tool.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 42 words
An apparatus for thermally embossing fold lines in a synthetic foil comprising: an embossing tool; and a perforated platen, through which a vacuum can be applied; said perforated platen having an air-permeable coating, at least in the area facing the embossing tool.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5, wherein said embossing tool operates at a temperature of between about 200°C and about 300°C.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5, wherein said perforated platen is heated and operates at a temperature of between about 20°C and about 60°C.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 21 words
%. An apparatus according to Claim 5 or 7, wherein heater coils are laid between the perforation in said perforated platen.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5 or 7, wherein said perforated platen is in thermal contact with a hot-plate.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 29 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5, wherein said air-permeable coating is in strip-form and is embedded in said perforated platen- in such a manner as to provide flat surface.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 23 words
An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said air-permeable coating is in one piece and covers the whole surface of said perforated platen.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 19 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5, 10 or 11 wherein said air-permeable coating is made of polyimide or teflon?.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 17 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5, 6 or 7, wherein said embossing tool is coated with polytetrafluorethylene.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 22 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5, 6 or 7, wherein said air-permeable coating has small slits to permit the passage of air.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 17 words
An apparatus according to Claim 5, 6 or 7, wherein said air-permeable coating is resilient or semi-resilient.
