Abstract

Abstract ABSTRACT A multi-layer blow oriented container is produced by providing a multi-layer tubular structure periodically heat sealing opposite sides of the tubular structure to one another at preselected locations along the length thereof, severing sections of the tubular form to provide a multiplicity of generally cylindrical preforms heating and blow orienting the cylindrical preform into a desired configuration. In the preferred embodiment the tubular structure contains a crosslinkable layer which is crosslinked after heat sealing to Provide crosslinked heat seal areas.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 98 words
A process for producing a container, comprising the steps of: providing a multi-layer tubular structure with at least one of said layers being cross-linkable; heat sealing opposite sides of said tubular structure to one another at preselected locations along the length thereof; cross-linking said cross-linkable layer of said multi-layer tubular structure; severing sections of said tubular form to produce a multiplicity of generally cylindrical preforms having heat sealed end portions; heating said preform to a temperature suitable for blow orientation; and blow orienting said preform into a desired configuration so as to produce the multi-layer blow oriented container.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 98 words
A process for producing a container, comprising the steps of: providing a multi-layer tubular structure with at least one of said layers being cross-linkable; heat sealing opposite sides of said tubular structure to one another at preselected locations along the length thereof; cross-linking said cross-linkable layer of said multi-layer tubular structure; severing sections of said tubular form to produce a multiplicity of generally cylindrical preforms having heat sealed end portions; heating said preform to a temperature suitable for blow orientation; and blow orienting said preform into a desired configuration so as to produce the multi-layer blow oriented container.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein said step of crosslinking is carried out by irradiating said multi-layer tubular structure with ionizing radiation.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process according to claim 2 wherein the innermost layer of said tubular structure is a crosslinkable layer, whereby said heat seals are crosslinked by said step of irradiating.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein said crosslinkable layer is a polymer of a l-mono olefin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein said crosslinkable layer is a polymer of ethylene.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein said crosslinkable material is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein said multi-layer tubular structure has a layer possessing low permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 43 words
The process according to claim 7 wherein said layer possessing low oxygen permeability is a material selected from the group consisting of copolymers of vinylidene chloride, a hydrolyzed copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, polyamides, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol and polymers of acrylonitrile.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 62 words
The process according to claim 1 wherein said step of blow orienting is carried out by; attaching said preform to a nozzle; placing said heated preform within a mold; providing pressurization to said preform through said nozzle so as to inflate said preform until said preform conforms to the shape of said mold; and removing the thus inflated preform from said mold.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 62 words
The process according to claim 1, wherein said tubular structure is provided with threading in an area between and substantially central to said heat seals and said step of blow orienting comprises blow orienting said preform into two molds having a desired container configuration from a point central to said area provided with threading to provide two containers from a single preform.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process according to claim l including the further step of longitudinally orienting said preform prior to blow orienting.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 19 words
A blow oriented multi-layer container having an innermost layer of a crosslinked polymer and a crosslinked heat seal area.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 19 words
A blow oriented multi-layer container having an innermost layer of a crosslinked polymer and a crosslinked heat seal area.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 20 words
The blow oriented multi-layer container according to claim 12 wherein said crosslinked layer is a polymer of a l-mono olefin.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 19 words
The multi-layer container according to claim 12 wherein said crosslinked layer is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 24 words
The blow oriented multi-layer container according to claim 12 wherein one of the multi-layers is a layer possessing low oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability.
