Abstract

Abstract ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention is directed to a novel rubber seal which is formed in place in a circular entry port in a concrete manhole for a sewer pipe, thereby providing a water-tight seal between the manhole rim and the sewer pipe, and a novel method of forming the seal in place in association with the concrete manhole when it is formed of concrete. The invention comprises a sealing ring for sealing the annular opening existing in a plane between an inner circular shaped member and an outer circular shaped member comprising a generally circular ring member having a generally V-shaped cross-sectional shaper the two legs of the V-cross-section shaped sealing ring member being embedded in the peripheral wall of the outer circular shaped member such that distortion laterally from the plane of the protruding base portion of the V-shaped, sealing ring member in either direction places a compression force on one of the legs of the V-shaped sealing ring member, thereby tending to increase the width and tighten the fit of the leg embedded in the wall and enhancing the sealing properties of the sealing ring in association with the wall of the outer circular member. The invention also comprises a novel method of embedding the legs of the V-shaped ring member in the peripheral wall of the outer circular shaped member while the member is being cast of settable material.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 172 words
A sealing ring for sealing the annular opening existing between an inner circular shaped member and an outer circular shaped member, comprising a generally circular ring member having a generally Y-shaped cross-sectional shape, comprising an inner annular portion with two annular legs projecting therefrom in a general radially outward direction, such that when the legs are embedded in the peripheral wall of an outer circular shaped member, lateral distortion of the inner annular portion of the ring in either direction will place a compression force on one of the legs of the Y-shaped sealing ring member, thereby tending to increase the width and tighten the fit of said one leg embedded in the wall and enhancing the sealing properties of the sealing ring in association with the wall of the outer circular member, wherein the two said annular legs of the sealing ring member are of tapered cross-section, the respective cross-sectional widths of the two legs diminishing from the extremities of the legs towards the inner annular portion of the ring member.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 172 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
The sealing ring of claim 1, wherein the inner annular portion of the ring member is of generally triangular cross-section, and a concave groove is formed in one side wall of said inner annular portion to facilitate lateral distortion of said inner annular portion.
