The invention relates to O-phosphonylmethyl derivatives isomers of enantiomeric and vicinal racemic diols of general formula I where R1 = H, C1-C3 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or adenin-9-yl-methyl; R2 and R3 = H or, together, they are part of a ribonucleoside nucleus; the two radicals R4 alternately represent H and a group -CH2P (O) (OH) 2, while the configuration on the carbon atoms is R, S or RS.
