Surgical cutting instrument for ultrasonic eye surgery

Abstract

Abstract A contoured and sharpened needle (1), used for surgical cutting, is formed with a gently curved shaft (2) which matches the surface (19) of the anterior lens capsule (20). The shaft (2) of the needle (1) is bent to provide easy handling of the needle during surgery. Irrigation fluid is delivered through the shaft (2) of the needle (1) to prevent the tip (10) from heating and to minimize trauma to the surrounding tissue. The tip (10) is hook-shaped to allow it to hook and remove the cut anterior capsule (20) once the cutting procedure is finished.
