Abstract

Abstract An apparatus and method of filtering solids from a liquid effluent wherein a sand filter having a single grade granular media is used having agitation of the effluent above the filter media surface at a rate to lift solids from the media surface and means for periodically backwashing clear effluents through the filter at a controlled rate which is not dependent upon the rate that a discharge system can receive the backwashing effluent. A trough is placed above the filter to (accepts) accept the backwash effluent upon its passing through the filter in the reverse direction.
