Abstract A PROCESS FOR SEPARATING MIXTURES INTO THEIR COMPONENT PARTS BY MEANS OF SELECTIVE PERMEATION THROUGH LIQUID (SURFACTANT) MEMBRANES. THE MIXTURE TO BE SEPARATED IS FIRST EMULSIFIED IN A AQUEOUS MEDIUM CONTAINING A SELECTED SURFACTANT. THE EMULSIFIED MIXTURE DROPLETS WHICH ARE COATED WITH SURFACTANT ARE THEN CONTACTED WITH A SELECTED SOLVENT. THE MORE PERMEABLE COMPONENTS(S) OF THE MIX- TURE PERMEATE THE MEMBRANE COATING AND PASS INTO THE SOLVENT PHASE. THE LESS PERMEABLE COMPONENT(S) REMAIN IN THE DROPLETS IN THE EMULSION PHASE. THE SEPARATED COMPONENTS ARE THEN SEPARATED FROM THE RESPECTIVE PHASES BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS.
