Abstract
Abstract A two fiber reflectance oximeter and hematocrit detector and a method of use are disclosed. The tips of the optical fibers employed are beveled at an angle optimized to minimize internal reflections, allowing the use of the fibers to simultaneously perform transmitting and receiving functions.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
117 words
A reflectance oximeter/hematocrit detector, comprising: first and second optical fibers, each of said optical fibers having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal ends of said optical fibers each being beveled to define an acute angle with respect to a line perpendicular to the axis of said fibers; means for generation of red and infrared light; means for measuring red and infrared light; first optical coupling means for coupling said means for generating red and infrared light to the proximal end of at least one of said two optical fibers; and second optical coupling means for coupling said means for measuring light to the proximal ends of both of said at least two optical fibers.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
24 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for generating red and infrared light comprises means for sequentially generating red and infrared light.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
33 words
An apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said means for measuring light comprises means for sequentially measuring red and infrared light emitted from the proximal ends of both of said two optical fibers.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
45 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 wherein said acute angle defined by the beveled distal ends of said optical fibers is approximately equal to the half angle of the cone of acceptance of said at least two optical fibers.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
22 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 wherein said distal ends of said optical fibers are coplanar.
