Abstract

Abstract A mobile terminal equipped with a GPS receiver uses a quality of service parameter to determine whether to request aiding data from a location server connected to the mobile communication network. When a request is received by the mobile terminal for its current position, the mobile terminal determines a desired quality of service. Based on the desired quality of service, the mobile terminal then determines whether aiding data currently stored in its memory is sufficient to meet the specified quality of service. If so, the mobile terminal computes its current location using aiding data currently stored in its memory. If not, the mobile terminal may request aiding data from the network or acquire current aiding data from a GPS satellite.
