Abstract

Abstract PCT No. PCT/GB95/02959 Sec. 371 Date Jun. 13, 1997 Sec. 102(e) Date Jun. 13, 1997 PCT Filed Dec. 18, 1995 PCT Pub. No. WO96/18428 PCT Pub. Date Jun. 20, 1996A surgical cannula includes a generally hollow inlet portion which can receive a fluid flow and an angled outlet portion connected in fluid communication with the inlet portion. The outlet portion is disposed at an angle of less than 180 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of the inlet portion. The inlet portion is provided with a structure to impart a rotational component of flow to fluid before such fluid encounters the angled outlet portion.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 85 words
A surgical cannula comprising a generally hollow inlet portion adapted to receive a fluid flow, and an angled outlet portion connected in fluid communication with said inlet portion, and said outlet portion is disposed at an angle of less than 180° with respect to the longitudinal axis of said inlet portion, characterized in that the inlet portion is provided with means to impart a rotational component of flow to fluid before such fluid encounters said angled outlet portion, said means comprising a spirally twisted component.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 85 words
A surgical cannula comprising a generally hollow inlet portion adapted to receive a fluid flow, and an angled outlet portion connected in fluid communication with said inlet portion, and said outlet portion is disposed at an angle of less than 180° with respect to the longitudinal axis of said inlet portion, characterized in that the inlet portion is provided with means to impart a rotational component of flow to fluid before such fluid encounters said angled outlet portion, said means comprising a spirally twisted component.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
A cannula as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means to impart the rotational component is internally located.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
A cannula as claimed in claim 2 wherein the said means are located within the inlet.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
A cannula as claimed in claim 1, wherein the means is in direct contact with the fluid flow in use.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
A cannula as claimed in claim 1 wherein the component has a helical or part-helical twist along its length or over a part of its length.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
A cannula as claimed in claim 5 wherein the outlet portion includes a conical end point and a plurality of exit windows in the region of the conical end point, through which fluid can flow.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 92 words
A surgical cannula comprising a generally hollow inlet portion adapted to receive a fluid flow, and an angled outlet portion connected in fluid communication with said inlet portion, wherein the inlet portion includes a bend which is non-planar with respect to the outlet portion, and said outlet portion is disposed at an angle of less than 180° with respect to the longitudinal axis of said inlet portion, wherein the inlet portion is provided with means to impart a rotational component of flow to fluid before such fluid encounters said angled outlet portion.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 92 words
A surgical cannula comprising a generally hollow inlet portion adapted to receive a fluid flow, and an angled outlet portion connected in fluid communication with said inlet portion, wherein the inlet portion includes a bend which is non-planar with respect to the outlet portion, and said outlet portion is disposed at an angle of less than 180° with respect to the longitudinal axis of said inlet portion, wherein the inlet portion is provided with means to impart a rotational component of flow to fluid before such fluid encounters said angled outlet portion.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
A cannula as claimed in claim 7 wherein the said bend is an integral part of the cannula.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 106 words
A surgical cannula comprising a generally hollow inlet portion adapted to receive a fluid flow, and an angled outlet portion connected in fluid communication with said inlet portion, wherein the outlet portion includes a conical end point and a plurality of exit windows in the region of the conical end point, through which fluid can flow, and said outlet portion is disposed at an angle of less than 180° with respect to the longitudinal axis of said inlet portion, characterized in that the inlet portion is provided with means to impart a rotational component of flow to fluid before such fluid encounters said angled outlet portion.
