Abstract

Abstract A method more efficiently indexes dynamic documents. The method adjusts the frequency with which dynamic documents are retrieved taking into account the extent to which the document varies between its most recent retrievals. Furthermore, the method selects portions of the document to be indexed based on the substance of the differences between recently retrieved copies.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 102 words
A method for determining an indexing protocol for a document, the method comprising the steps of: retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; retrieving a second copy of the document at a second time at a time interval subsequent to said first time; comparing said first copy of the document to said second copy of the document and identifying in said step of comparing, the extent to which said first copy and said second copy differ; and adjusting said time interval for a subsequent retrieval of said document in accordance with the results of the substep of identifying.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 102 words
A method for determining an indexing protocol for a document, the method comprising the steps of: retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; retrieving a second copy of the document at a second time at a time interval subsequent to said first time; comparing said first copy of the document to said second copy of the document and identifying in said step of comparing, the extent to which said first copy and said second copy differ; and adjusting said time interval for a subsequent retrieval of said document in accordance with the results of the substep of identifying.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method of claim 1 wherein when said extent to which the first and second copy differ exceeds a predetermined threshold said step of adjusting reduces the time interval.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the size of the reduction of the interval is related to the extent to which the predetermined threshold is exceeded.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 1 wherein when said extent to which the first and second copy differ falls below a predetermined threshold said step of adjusting increases the time interval.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 37 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the size of the increase of the interval is related to the extent to which the predetermined threshold is greater than the extent to which the first and second copy differ.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 100 words
A method for determining a frequency for indexing a dynamic document, the method comprising the steps of: retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; at a second time, a predetermined time interval after said first time, retrieving a second copy of the document; identifying any differences between said first copy and said second copy; and when differences exist, determining a new predetermined time interval which is less than said predetermined time interval; and retrieving a third copy of the document at a third time which corresponds to the new predetermined time interval after said second time.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 100 words
A method for determining a frequency for indexing a dynamic document, the method comprising the steps of: retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; at a second time, a predetermined time interval after said first time, retrieving a second copy of the document; identifying any differences between said first copy and said second copy; and when differences exist, determining a new predetermined time interval which is less than said predetermined time interval; and retrieving a third copy of the document at a third time which corresponds to the new predetermined time interval after said second time.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 61 words
The method of claim 6 wherein when said step of identifying differences indicates that no differences exist the method further comprises the steps of: determining a replacement predetermined time interval which is longer than said predetermined time interval; and retrieving a third copy of the document at a third time which corresponds to the replacement time interval after said second time.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 6 wherein an amount of decrease of said predetermined time interval depends on the extent of the differences between said first copy and said second copy.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 91 words
The method of claim 6 wherein after retrieving said third copy of the document the method comprises the further steps of: identifying any differences between said second copy and said third copy; when differences exist between said second copy and said third copy, determining another new predetermined time interval; comparing said another new predetermined time interval to a minimum time interval; and using said new predetermined time interval to select a time to retrieve a fourth copy of the document when said new predetermined time interval exceeds said minimum time interval.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 36 words
The method of claim 9 wherein when said new predetermined time interval is less than a minimum time interval, using said minimum time interval to select a time to retrieve a fourth copy of the document.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 91 words
A method for more efficiently indexing documents, the method comprising the steps of: retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; at second time, a predetermined time interval after said first time, retrieving a second copy of the document; identifying any differences between said first copy and said second copy; and when differences exist, quantifying the identified differences; selecting a portion of said document for indexing in accordance with the quantification of identified differences; indexing the selected portion of said document; and determining a new predetermined time interval.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 91 words
A method for more efficiently indexing documents, the method comprising the steps of: retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; at second time, a predetermined time interval after said first time, retrieving a second copy of the document; identifying any differences between said first copy and said second copy; and when differences exist, quantifying the identified differences; selecting a portion of said document for indexing in accordance with the quantification of identified differences; indexing the selected portion of said document; and determining a new predetermined time interval.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 11 wherein the selected portion of the document contains a component of the document common to both the first copy and the second copy.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 11 wherein said new predetermined time interval is determined in accordance with the quantification of identified differences.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 13 wherein the selected portion of the document contains a component of the document common to both the first copy and the second copy.
