Abstract

Abstract A method for indicating a change in coding rate so as to maintain synchronization between a communication system and a mobile station. A mobile station can request either to increase or decrease the degree of channel coding. The system can grant the request and send an indication to the mobile station indicating the new degree of coding. The indication is provided outside the field in which the coding rate is going to be changed. A modulation symbol alphabet can also changed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
A method for changing the degree of channel coding used by a mobile station within a communication system, comprising the steps of: detecting an error rate using an assigned degree of channel coding; determining whether the detected error rate exceeds a threshold value; requesting a higher degree of channel coding from said system when the error rate exceeds the threshold value; receiving an indication of a new degree of channel coding; and changing said degree of channel coding at said mobile station.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 82 words
A method for changing the degree of channel coding used by a mobile station within a communication system, comprising the steps of: detecting an error rate using an assigned degree of channel coding; determining whether the detected error rate exceeds a threshold value; requesting a higher degree of channel coding from said system when the error rate exceeds the threshold value; receiving an indication of a new degree of channel coding; and changing said degree of channel coding at said mobile station.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
A method according to claim 1, wherein said indication is at least one bit in a message sent from said system to said mobile station, wherein said at least one bit is provided in a field outside a field within which the new degree of coding will be used.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to claim 2, wherein said indication is provided in a reserved field.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to claim 2, wherein said indication is provided within a synchronization field.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method according to claim 2, wherein said indication is provided within a packet channel feedback field.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 87 words
A method for increasing a modulation symbol alphabet used by a mobile station in a communication system, comprising the steps of: detecting an error rate at said mobile station; determining whether said detected error rate is below a threshold value; requesting an increased modulation symbol alphabet from said system when said detected error rate is below said threshold; receiving an indication of an increased modulation symbol alphabet; and changing said modulation symbol alphabet at said mobile station to said increased modulation symbol alphabet indicated in said indication.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 87 words
A method for increasing a modulation symbol alphabet used by a mobile station in a communication system, comprising the steps of: detecting an error rate at said mobile station; determining whether said detected error rate is below a threshold value; requesting an increased modulation symbol alphabet from said system when said detected error rate is below said threshold; receiving an indication of an increased modulation symbol alphabet; and changing said modulation symbol alphabet at said mobile station to said increased modulation symbol alphabet indicated in said indication.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 49 words
A method according to claim 6, wherein said indication is at least one bit in a message sent from said system to said mobile station, wherein said at least one bit is provided in a field outside a field within which the new modulation symbol alphabet will be used.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to claim 7, wherein said indication is provided in a reserved field.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to claim 7, wherein said indication is provided within a synchronization field.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method according to claim 7, wherein said indication is provided within a packet channel feedback field.
