Abstract

Abstract A normally white twisted birefringent liquid crystal display having first and second retardation films having retardation values of about 80-200 nm on opposite sides of a liquid crystal layer for the purpose of expanding the viewing angles of the display. Also, the viewing zone of this normally white display can be shifted vertically by rotating the optical axes of the retardation films so as to position the viewing zone away from an inversion area.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 116 words
A normally white twisted nematic liquid crystal display comprising: a liquid crystal layer for twisting at least one normally incident visible wavelength of light from about 80°-100° as it passes therethrough when said liquid crystal layer is in substantially an off state thereby defining a twisted nematic display; first and second negative biaxial retarders, each of said first and second negative biaxial retarders defined by n x >n y >n z , where n x , n y , and n z are respective indices of refraction for each of said biaxial retarders; and wherein said first negative biaxial retarder has a retardation value d·(n z -n x ) of from about -100 to -200 nm.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 116 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
The normally white display of claim 1, wherein the thickness of said liquid crystal layer is from about 4.5 to 6.5 μm, and the birefringence of said liquid crystal is from about 0.075 to 0.095.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 36 words
The normally white display of claim 2, further comprising a front polarizer and a rear polarizer, wherein a transmission axis of the front polarizer is aligned substantially perpendicular to a transmission axis of the rear polarizer.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
The normally white display of claim 1, wherein said first and second negative biaxial retarders each are made of a polyimide material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
The normally white display of claim 1, wherein said liquid crystal layer has a thickness of from about 4.5 to 6.0 μm.
