Abstract

Abstract A self contained gas powered endoscopic surgical apparatus is provided for placing lateral lines of surgical fasteners into body tissue. The apparatus includes a frame portion, an elongated portion extending from the frame portion, and an articulating cartridge assembly mounted to a distal end of the elongated portion. An anvil member is operatively associated with the articulating cartridge assembly and has a forming surface, thereon against which surgical fasteners are driven as they are ejected from the cartridge assembly. A collar which is provided in the elongated portion translates longitudinally to draw a cable which operates to move the anvil member relative to the cartridge assembly, thereby clamping body tissue to be fastened. A self contained pneumatic system is associated with the frame portion and is actuable to eject the surgical fasteners from the cartridge assembly. A linkage mechanism is also provided for effectuating the articulation of the cartridge assembly to increase the range of operability of the apparatus.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 189 words
Apparatus for driving surgical fastners comprising: a) a frame portion; b) an elongated portion extending longitudinally from said frame portion; c) a cartridge assembly having a proximal end and a distal end, said proximal end mounted in a distal end portion of said elongated portion, and having a tissue engaging surface thereon; d) an anvil member having a proximal end and a distal end, said anvil member having a fastener forming surface thereon, said anvil member mounted relative to said cartridge assembly and movable between an open position and a closed position wherein said distal end of said anvil member and said distal end of said cartridge assembly are in juxtaposed alignment; e) a cable system including a linkage mechanism associated at least in pan with said frame portion and a cable mechanism, the linkage mechanism extending through the elongated portion and being engageable with the cable mechanism distally of the frame portion to move the anvil member between the open and closed positions; and f) means for ejecting said surgical fasteners from said cartridge assembly, whereby said fasteners form against said fastener forming surface of said anvil member.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 189 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising sealing means associated with said elongated portion for inhibiting the egress of gas therethrough.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 51 words
Apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said linkage mechanism includes an articulating handle member associated with said frame potion and an extension member operatively connected to said articulating handle member and extending through said elongated portion to said cable mechanism, said cable mechanism being operatively associated with said anvil member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 76 words
Apparatus as rated in claim 3, wherein said cable mechanism includes a cable member connected at a leading end thereof to a distal end portion of said extension member and, at a trailing end thereof engaging said cartridge assembly, said cable member being operatively associated with said anvil member intermediate said leading and trailing end thereof such that closure of said articulating handle member causes said anvil member to move between said open and closed positions.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
Apparatus as recited in claim 4, wherein said cable mechanism includes a transverse pulley member connected to a proximal end portion of said anvil member and an annular pulley member disposed in a proximal end portion of said elongated potion for directing longitudinal translation of said cable member within said elongated potion.
