Abstract

Abstract This invention allows a user to have a smartcard (66) and a smartcard-based transponder (14). This smartcard-based transponder (14) can accept money from the smartcard (14). The amount transferred from the smartcard (66) can be stored in the transponder memory (80,82). At a toll plaza (29), a toll amount can be subtracted within a short period of time, so that a vehicle (26) bearing the transponder (14) will not pass through the zone in which the transponder (14) and the interrogator (12) may perform RF communications before an appropriate toll amount can be decremented from the amount stored within the transponder (14).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 112 words
A transponder operable to communicate with an interrogator, said transponder comprising: a) a communications circuit operable to communicate electrically with said interrogator; b) a smartcard interface operable to place a smartcard in electrical communication with said transponder; and c) a transponder controller in electrical communication with said communications circuit and with said smartcard through said smartcard interface, said transponder controller being operable: 1) to receive a data value from said smartcard, 2) to hold said data value in transponder memory, 3) to re-compute a new data value in response to communications between said communications circuit and said interrogator, and 4) to transmit said new data value to said smartcard for storage therein.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 112 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 35 words
The transponder of claim 1 and further comprising an encryption circuit in electrical communication with said transponder controller whereby said new data value may be transmitted to said smartcard for storage in an encrypted format.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
The transponder of claim 1 wherein said transponder memory is a separate integrated circuit from said transponder controller.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 12 words
The transponder of claim 3 wherein said transponder memory is an EEPROM.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 79 words
A method of using a smartcard as a form of payment or other data carrying means in a radio frequency identification system, the method comprising the steps of: a) downloading a data value from said smartcard into a transponder memory; b) receiving an interrogation from an interrogator; c) calculating a new data value in said transponder; d) transmitting a certificate from said transponder to said interrogator; and e) transmitting said new data value from said transponder to said smartcard.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 79 words
A method of using a smartcard as a form of payment or other data carrying means in a radio frequency identification system, the method comprising the steps of: a) downloading a data value from said smartcard into a transponder memory; b) receiving an interrogation from an interrogator; c) calculating a new data value in said transponder; d) transmitting a certificate from said transponder to said interrogator; and e) transmitting said new data value from said transponder to said smartcard.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method of claim 5 and further comprising the step of encryption said new data value prior to transmitting said new data value to said smartcard.
