Abstract
Abstract Compounds having a 5 membered, nitrogen containing ring with a thione group adjacent to a nitrogen atom substituted with an OR group have antimicrobial properties. Metal complexes or salts of these compounds also have antimicrobial properties. The compounds, or the metal complexes or salts thereof, can be used as a cutting fluid preservative, a wood preservative, in cooling water applications or as an antimicrobial agent in a paint. Some of the compounds are new. The metal complexes or salts are new.

A metal complex of a compound of formula I ##STR10## wherein the metal is copper or a metal of Group VIII or IIB of the Periodic Table, A and B are independently selected from --C(R 2 ) 2 --, --CR 2 ═ or >C═NR 2 ; D is --NR 2 -- or sulphur R is hydrogen; and R 2 is hydrogen, C 1-6 hydrocarbyl, C 1-6 hydrocarbyl substituted by halogen or two groups R 2 together with the carbon atom or carbon atoms to which they are attached form a 5- or 6-membered hydrocarbon ring system.
