Abstract

Abstract Graded restricted access to a System Administration Manager program is provided by equipping that System Administration Manager program with the ability to interpret certain classes of configuration files when it is started by a user desiring to obtain graded restricted access. One class of files identifies the various activities that the System Administration Manager program is to perform, graded restricted access or not. This class of files identifies activity names, icons and information about what to call or execute to perform the activity once it has been selected for running, and may collect activities into hierarchial groups. Another class of files associates selected users with selected activities. If the user running the System Administration Manager program is one who has activities associated with his user id, a menu screen for proceeding with those activities (and only those activities) is presented to the user. A menu of operations is also used for assisting the super user in establishing graded restricted access to the System Administration Manager program for the non super users selected to have it. Various security safeguards are incorporated into the System Administration Manager to prevent a user from surreptitiously promoting himself to super user.

A method of allowing a computer system super user of unlimited privileges to grant to an ordinary user of the computer system graded restricted access to a specified collection of activities registered to a System Administration Manager program and performed by software installed in the computer system, the method comprising the steps of: (a) storing in a first collection of one or more files related by a first naming convention, a formatted indication of all the activities that can be performed by using the System Administration Manager program, including names of activities, icons associated with each activity and commands for executing each software program whose execution corresponds to an activity; (b) storing in a second collection of one or more files related by a second naming convention, and accessible only by the super user, a formatted indication of the activities that are to be the specified collection and the ordinary user that is to have graded restricted access to the specified collection; and (c) executing the System Administration Manager program at the request of an arbitrary user, such executing including the steps of: (d) temporarily promoting the arbitrary user to super user for the duration of steps (e) through (h); (e) subsequent to step (d), inspecting the second collection to determine if the arbitrary user is an ordinary user named therein; and (f) if the arbitrary user is an ordinary user named in the second collection, then performing steps (g) and (h) recited below, elsewise ending the temporary promotion of step (d) and declining to perform steps (g) and (h): (g) displaying a menu of the specified activities, and only those activities; and (h) executing from the menu of specified activities one or more activities thereof selected by the promoted user.
