Claim 3
Dependent Claim
68 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 1, additionally comprising: subscriber channel selection means for providing selection signals corresponding to video channels selected by a subscriber; and means for transmitting the selection signals to the terminal means in a video control channel in the narrowband used to convey the telephony signals, said video channel switching means being responsive to said selection signals for selecting the subscriber-selected video channels.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
54 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 2, additionally comprising a cross-connect means for the narrowband telephony signals, whereby the video control channel from the subscriber can be combined with other video control channels from other subscribers to consolidate said subscriber selection signals and transmit said consolidated signals to the video channel switching means.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 3, wherein said consolidated signals are transmitted in a serial bus interface (SBI) format for the telephony signals.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
50 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 3, wherein the video channel switching means comprises a plurality of video line shelves, the number of line shelves corresponding to the maximum number of subscribers requiring video service, said shelves each including a video line card for serving one or more subscribers.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
39 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 5, wherein the video line card functions as a video channel switch for selecting the subscriber-selected video channels for each subscriber and for placing the selected channels in a subscriber frequency band.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
32 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 6, additionally comprising a video controller shelf comprising a plurality of video control units for providing control signals to each of the video line cards.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
44 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 1, additionally comprising: subscriber control means for transmitting and receiving control signals; and means for conveying control signals between the subscriber and the terminal means in a video control channel in the narrowband used for telephony signals.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
22 words
A telecommunications system as described in claim 8, wherein the control signals are conveyed bidirectionally between the subscriber and the terminal means.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
366 words
A communication system for providing integrated narrowband telephony and video services to subscribers, comprising: a plurality of video line shelves (106, FIG. 9), each having a first plurality of video line card slot groups (e.g., twenty-four), each slot group being capable of being populated with up to a maximum second plurality (e.g., four) of video line cards, each card responsive to multiple video channels (104) and a switched video control signal (126), each card for providing a third plurality (e.g., six) of selected video channels; management means (138) having summers, said summers being equal in number to said first plurality, each summer responsive to said third plurality of selected video channels from a corresponding video line card slot group, for providing said third plurality of selected video channels from each of said second plurality of populated cards within said corresponding group; an optical distribution shelf (30) having a plurality of optical distribution units (50), being equal in number up to a maximum of said first plurality of video line card groups, an optical distribution unit being responsive to said third plurality of selected video channels from each of said second plurality of populated cards within said corresponding group and also responsive to a time-division multiplexed (TDM) telephony signal (44) for providing a frequency-division multiplexed (FDM) telephony and video signal (18) on an optical fiber; a plurality of optical network units (16), being in number up to as many as said first plurality of optical distribution units, each having a demultiplexer (70) for demultiplexing the FDM telephony and video channels for providing (FIG. 6) telephony signals (64) and video signals (66) and having means (74) responsive to a control signal from a control (21, FIG. 11) in a subscriber premises for combining the subscriber control signal with other control signals from other subscribers and transmitting (70, 72) the combined signals as broadband control signals in a narrowband (44, FIG. 9); cross-connect means (24), responsive to a plurality of broadband control signals from a plurality of optical network units to form a frame of broadband control signals (166); and a broadband control unit (116), responsive to the frame of broadband control signals, for providing the control signal (126).
