Abstract

Abstract The present invention relates to genetic mutations in mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase genes that segregate with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The invention provides methods for detecting such mutations, as a diagnostic for Alzheimer's Disease, either before or after the onset clinical symptoms. The invention further provides treatment of cytochrome oxidase dysfunction.

Claim 10
Dependent Claim 66 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein the presence of the at least one mutation in the sequence of a cytochrome oxidase gene is determined by a method based on ligation of oligonucleotide sequences which anneal immediately adjacent to each other on said cytochrome oxidase gene sequence, wherein ligase-mediated covalent attachment of the oligonucleotide sequences to one another occurs only when the oligonucleotides are correctly base-paired.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method according to claim 9 wherein the method based on ligation of oligonucleotide sequences which anneal immediately adjacent to each other on said cytochrome oxidase gene sequence is the ligase chain reaction.
