Claim 1
Independent Claim
251 words
An assembly for use in a resuscitator apparatus equipped with a squeeze bag, said squeeze bag having an opening and formed of compressible material, said assembly comprising: a first manifold adapted for connection to a squeeze bag opening, said first manifold including a chamber, pressurized breathing gas inlet means for introducing pressurized breathing gas into said first manifold, ambient air inlet means for introducing atmospheric air into said chamber, first interior passageway means for communicating with said chamber, and second interior passageway means spaced from said first interior passageway means and said chamber for communicating with said squeeze bag; and valve means operatively connected to said first manifold for regulating flow of said pressurized breathing gas and said atmospheric air through said first manifold, said valve means comprising a first substantially unbiased valve element for permitting introduction of said atmospheric air into said first manifold through said ambient air inlet means and a second substantially unbiased valve element for permitting introduction of at least one of said atmospheric air and said pressurized breathing gas into a squeeze bag, said first valve element being disposed between said ambient air inlet means and said chamber, and said second valve element being disposed between said second passageway means and a squeeze bag, wherein upon interruption of a flow of pressurized breathing gas through said pressurized gas inlet means, atmospheric air flows through said chamber, said first interior passageway means and said second interior passageway means for introduction of atmospheric air into a squeeze bag.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
13 words
The assembly of claim 1 wherein said valve means is a unitary member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
41 words
The assembly of claim 2 wherein said unitary member is a flexible flapper valve, said first valve element constituting a first region of said flexible flapper valve and said second valve element constituting a second region of said flexible flapper valve.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
32 words
The assembly of claim 1 further comprising a breathing gas reservoir means in fluid communication with said first manifold for storing pressurized breathing gas introduced by said pressurized breathing gas inlet means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
35 words
The assembly of claim 4 wherein said first interior passageway means communicates said breathing gas reservoir means with said chamber, and second interior passageway means communicates said breathing gas reservoir means with a squeeze bag.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
133 words
The assembly of claim 5 further comprising: means for providing an interface between said resuscitator apparatus and the airway of a subject; and means for fluidly coupling said first manifold and said interface means, whereby, under a flow of said pressurized breathing gas introduced through said breathing gas inlet means, said pressurized breathing gas impinges upon said first valve element to urge said first valve element into sealing engagement with said ambient air inlet means such that said subject is administered essentially pure breathing gas by said resuscitator apparatus and, upon interruption of said breathing gas flow through said breathing gas inlet means, said atmospheric air enters said ambient air inlet means and freely passes said first and second valve elements such that said subject may inspire said atmospheric air essentially without resistance.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
33 words
The assembly of claim 1 wherein said first valve element sealingly covers said ambient air inlet means under the influence of a flow of pressurized gas introduced through said pressurized gas inlet means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
69 words
The assembly of claim 5 wherein during a self-restoration phase of a squeeze bag, residual pressure within said breathing gas reservoir means is applied to the manifold chamber at a level sufficient to cause the first valve element to seal the ambient air inlet means such that atmospheric air is prevented from entering the resuscitator during delivery of a flow of pressurized gas through said pressurized gas inlet means.
