Abstract

Abstract A car seat is provided for restraining a child seated in the car seat. The car seat includes a seat shell having a bottom seat portion and a back support portion. A barrier shield is supported above the bottom seat portion and is pivotable from an initial position to a child-restraining position. A child-restraining harness is attached to the seat shell and extends over an upper torso of the child when the child is seated in the car seat to restrain forward motion of the child. The child-restraining harness is connected to the barrier shield. The barrier shield is located at the initial position when a child is harnessed in the child seat. The child-restraining harness moves the barrier shield from the initial position to a child-restraining position when the upper torso of the child harnessed into the child seat moves forward to push against the child-restraining harness.
