Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 93 words
A backup battery management method having a backup battery and a charging system driving a vehicle battery, the method comprising the steps of: averaging a voltage derived from the vehicle battery at a first rate and providing a short-term average system voltage in response thereto; averaging the short-term average system voltage, at a second rate lesser than the first rate, and providing a long-term average voltage in response thereto; and charging the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds the long-term average voltage by a predetermined threshold.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 93 words
A backup battery management method having a backup battery and a charging system driving a vehicle battery, the method comprising the steps of: averaging a voltage derived from the vehicle battery at a first rate and providing a short-term average system voltage in response thereto; averaging the short-term average system voltage, at a second rate lesser than the first rate, and providing a long-term average voltage in response thereto; and charging the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds the long-term average voltage by a predetermined threshold.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising the step of: establishing a first threshold; and charging the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds the first threshold, established in the step of establishing a first threshold.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 47 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising the step of: establishing a second threshold; and stopping the charging of the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds a second threshold, established in the step of establishing a second threshold.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 50 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 further comprising the steps of: determining if the backup battery is shorted; and stopping the charging of the backup battery from the charging system while the backup battery is shorted as determined in the step of determining if the backup battery is shorted.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 56 words
A method in accordance with claim 4 wherein the step of determining if the backup battery is shorted comprises the steps of: charging the backup battery for a predetermined time; measuring a voltage of the backup battery; posting a backup battery shorted flag when the voltage of the backup battery does not exceed a predetermined threshold.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 100 words
A backup battery management apparatus having a backup battery and a charging system driving a vehicle battery, the apparatus comprising: first averaging means for averaging a voltage derived from the vehicle battery at a first rate and providing a short-term average system voltage in response thereto; second averaging means for averaging the short-term average system voltage, at a second rate lesser than the first rate, and providing a long-term average voltage in response thereto; and means for charging the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds the long-term average voltage by a predetermined threshold.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 100 words
A backup battery management apparatus having a backup battery and a charging system driving a vehicle battery, the apparatus comprising: first averaging means for averaging a voltage derived from the vehicle battery at a first rate and providing a short-term average system voltage in response thereto; second averaging means for averaging the short-term average system voltage, at a second rate lesser than the first rate, and providing a long-term average voltage in response thereto; and means for charging the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds the long-term average voltage by a predetermined threshold.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 34 words
A apparatus in accordance with claim 6 further comprising: means for establishing a first threshold; and charging the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds the first threshold.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 37 words
A apparatus in accordance with claim 6 further comprising: means for establishing a second threshold; and stopping the charging of the backup battery from the charging system while the short-term average system voltage exceeds the second threshold.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 45 words
A apparatus in accordance with claim 6 further comprising: means for determining if the backup battery is shorted; and means for stopping the charging of the backup battery from the charging system while the backup battery is shorted as determined by the means for determining.
