Abstract

Abstract A method for monitoring catalytic activity of a catalytic converter through which exhaust gas can flow in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine includes measuring a temperature at least at two temperature measuring sensors and periodically repeatedly determining a temperature measuring variable from signals issued by the sensors during operation of the engine with an engine monitoring system. Further measuring variables characterizing an applicable operating state of the engine are determined, a temperature limit value is determined from the further measuring variables, catalytic activity is determined by comparing the temperature measuring variable with the temperature limit value, and a report is issued if the temperature measuring variable is lower than the temperature limit value.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 118 words
A method for monitoring catalytic activity of a catalytic converter through which exhaust gas can flow in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, which comprises: measuring a temperature at least at two temperature measuring sensors being associated with the catalytic converter; periodically repeatedly determining a temperature measuring variable from signals issued by the sensors during operation of the engine with an engine monitoring system; determining further measuring variables characterizing an applicable operating state of the engine; determining a temperature limit value from the further measuring variables; determining catalytic activity by comparing the temperature measuring variable with the temperature limit value; and issuing a report if the temperature measuring variable is lower than the temperature limit value.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
The method according to claim 1, which comprises determining the temperature limit value with at least one temperature measuring variable ascertained in an earlier measurement, besides the further measuring variables.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 41 words
The method according to claim 2, which comprises recording the activity and taking the activity into account for the applicable determination of the temperature limit value, over a period of time sufficiently long for averaging out special strains in each case.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
The method according to claim 1, which comprises defining the temperature measuring variable as a difference between the temperatures measured by the two temperature measuring sensors.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 35 words
The method according to claim 1, which comprises: a) forming a deviation over time of at least one of the signals; and b) inhibiting the measurement if the deviation over time differs substantially from 0.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 69 words
The method according to claim 1, which comprises: a) monitoring the signal of a first one of the temperature measuring sensors for discontinuous changes; b) observing the signal of a second one of the temperature measuring sensors over a short period of time, if a discontinuous change occurs; and c) forming the temperature measuring variable from the changes over time of the signal of the second temperature measuring sensor.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method according to claim 6, which comprises selecting the short period of time to be at most approximately 3 seconds.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method according to claim 6, which comprises selecting the short period of time to be between approximately 1 second and approximately 2 seconds.
