Abstract
Abstract Compact valve lifters are disclosed for overhead camshaft engines with direct acting valve gear and for engines with indirect acting valve actuation such as push rod actuated overhead valves. Two step variable lift and non-variable lift valve lifters are included as are roller and non-roller follower types with various features in common.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
168 words
Valve lift mechanism for an engine having a camshaft mounted at a level no higher than the actuating end of an associated valve, said mechanism comprising support means, a camshaft carried by the support means and having a pair of spaced cams, a valve lifter including a cam follower having a cylindrical body with first and second annular ends and an outer cylinder surface reciprocably carried in the support means, the first annular end including a pair of laterally spaced first cam engaging portions engaging the cams, and hydraulic lash adjusting means in the lifter and positioned laterally between the cam engaging portions and including a plunger reciprocable in the valve lifter and carrying check valve means, the plunger defining a high pressure chamber adjacent the first end and an inner reservoir in the lifter extending from the check valve means toward the follower second end, and means for delivering oil through the follower to the reservoir distal from the follower first end and the check valve means.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
21 words
Valve lift mechanism as in claim 1 wherein the cam engaging portions of said cylindrical body comprise a pair of rollers.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
35 words
Valve lift mechanism as in claim 2 and further including a contact member mounted adjacent the second end of the body and having a seat for engaging a valve actuating element of a valve train.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
127 words
Valve lift mechanism as in claim 1, wherein the camshaft includes a low lift cam mounted between the spaced cams which are high lift cams, the valve lifter is a two step variable lift type, the cam follower is a high lift cam follower and said body is annular having an inner cylinder surface concentric with the outer cylinder surface, and the valve lifter further comprises a low lift cam follower including a hollow piston with at least one closed end, a second end and a cylindrical outer wall reciprocably engaging the inner cylinder surface of said body, the closed end including a second cam engaging portion generally between the first cam engaging portions, and locking means for selectively locking the followers together for coincident reciprocating motion.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
A valve mechanism as in claim 4 and further comprising spring means biasing the high lift cam follower toward the cams.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
19 words
A valve mechanism as in claim 4 wherein said first cam engaging portions comprise a pair of spaced rollers.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
17 words
A valve mechanism as in claim 6 wherein said second cam engaging portion comprises a third roller.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
38 words
A valve mechanism as in claim 4 and further including a contact member mounted on the second end of the hollow piston, the contact member having a seat for engaging a valve actuating element of a valve train.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
18 words
A valve mechanism as in claim 8 wherein said seat includes a recess for receiving a push rod.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
82 words
Valve lift mechanism as in claim 2 and further comprising guide means preventing rotation of the body around an axis of reciprocation, the guide means including an axially extending recess formed by mating grooves in the support means and in an opposing portion of the outer cylinder surface of the body, and an axial pin received in the grooves and fixedly retained in the support means so that bearing movements of the guide means occur exclusively between the pin and the body.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
41 words
Valve lift mechanism as in claim 10 wherein the recess and the pin are cylindrical, the recess being formed by part cylindrical mating grooves in the support means and in an opposing portion of the outer cylinder surface of the body.
