Abstract

Abstract A safety cane incorporates an ambient light sensitive illumination device for conserving battery power. A tipping detector is also incorporated which sounds an audible alarm after a first time delay. If the cane is not retrieved by the end of the second time delay, the cane broadcasts an initiating instruction to a telephone dialing device.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 160 words
A safety cane, comprising: an elongated tubular support structure having telescoping upper and lower sections and a handle at one end, a ground engaging tip at an other end, and a power source located therebetween; an ambient light sensing device substantially within the support structure and operatively connected to the power source for determining the ambient light level of an environment surrounding the cane; and a light emitting device positioned substantially within the lower section of the support structure, and operatively connected to the power source, to the ambient light sensing device and to a manually operable first switch in the vicinity of the handle so as to illuminate a path ahead of the cane when the first switch is activated and when the ambient light conditions are low, wherein the support structure has two radially directed, acutely, angulary displaced detente mechanisms for vertically adjusting the height of the cane and for directing the light emitting device for ambidextrous operation.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 160 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 119 words
The cane of claim 1, including a second switch in the vicinity of the handle operatively connected to the power source and an alarm circuit, wherein the alarm circuit includes a declination detector, a delay device for establishing a delay period, and a radio frequency transmitter operatively connected to the delay device for activating an external telephone call initiating device when the delay period expires, so that displacement of the can from a substantially vertical position for the duration of the delay period activates the alarm and return of the can to the substantially vertical position before the end of the delay period disables the delay device, whereby the alarm is activated when a potentially disabling fall is detected.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 258 words
A safety can, comprising: an elongated tubular support structure having telescoping upper and lower sections and a handle at one end, a ground engaging tip at an other end, and a power source located therebetween; an ambient light sensing device substantially within the support structure and operatively connected to the power source for determining the ambient light level of an environment surrounding the cane; and a light emitting device positioned substantially within the lower section of the support structure, and operatively connected to the power source, to the ambient light sensing device and to a manually operable first switch in the vicinity of the handle so as to illuminate a path ahead of the cane when the first switch is activated and when the ambient light conditions are low, including a second switch in the vicinity of the handle operatively connected to the power source, an alarm circuit, and an audible alarm all located substantially within the support structure, so that activation of the second switch sounds the audible alarm, wherein the alarm circuit includes a declination detector and a first delay device for establishing a first delay period so that displacement of the cane from a substantially vertical position for the duration of the first delay period activates the audible alarm and return of the cane to the substantially vertical position before the first delay period expires disables the first delay device, whereby the audible alarm is activated when a disabling condition indicated by a fall having a duration greater than the first delay period is detected.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
The cane of claim 3, wherein the alarm circuit includes a second delay device for establishing a second delay period.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 24 words
The cane of claim 4 wherein the first delay period is approximately 11 seconds and wherein the second delay period is approximately two minutes.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 32 words
