Claim 1
Independent Claim
174 words
Within a network, a method by which a mapping application within a first network station detects a relative location of a first device to a second device on the network, the method comprising the steps of: (a) instructing, by the mapping application within the first network station, the second device to listen for messages from the first device; (b) when the second device receives a first message from the first device, recording a first port of the second device over which the second device received the first message by the second device in response to the instruction given in step (a), including (b.1) recording an indication that the second device received a message from the first device over a single port; and, (c) when the second device receives an additional message from the first device over a port of the second device other than the first port of the second device, performing, the following substep; (c.1) indicating that the recording of the first port, performed in step (b), is invalid for determining network configuration.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
44 words
A method as in claim 1 wherein substep (c.1) includes changing the indication that the second device received the message from the first device over a single port to an indication that the second device received messages from the first device over multiple ports.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
41 words
A method as in claim 1 additionally comprising the following step: (d) interrogating, by the mapping application within the first network station, the second device to determine over which port of the second device the second device received the first message.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
240 words
Within a network, a combination by which a mapping application within a first network station detects a relative location of a first device to a second device on the network, the combination comprising: means, within the mapping application within the first network station, for directing the second device to listen for messages from the first device; means, within the mapping application within the first network station, for instructing the first device to send a message to the second device; listening means, within the second device, for in response to direction from the mapping application within the first network station listening for messages from the first device; and, recording means within the second device for, when the listening means detects the second device has received a first message from the first device, recording a first port of the second device over which the second device received the first message, wherein the recording means is additionally for, when the listening means detects the second device has received a first message from the first device, recording an indication that the second device received a message from the first device over a single port, and wherein the recording means is additionally for, when the second device receives an additional message from the first device over a port of the second device other than the first port of the second device, indicating that the recording of the first port is invalid for determining network configuration.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
55 words
A combination as in claim 4 wherein the recording means indicates that the recording of the first port is invalid by changing the indication that the second device received the message from the first device over a single port, to an indication that the second device received messages from the first device over multiple ports.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
39 words
A combination as in claim 4 wherein the mapping application additionally comprises: interrogating means, within the mapping application, for interrogating the second device to determine over which port the second device received the first message from the first device.
