Abstract

Abstract A hydratable iontophoretic bioelectrode includes a plurality of layers of material capable of absorbing and holding an ionized fluid when placed in contact with the fluid. Adjacent layers are maintained at least partially out of contact from one another by disposition between the layers of spacing elements such as sugar or other dissolvable particles or cellulose. The edges of the layers may be crimped to maintain the layers in a stack for assembly with an electrode sheet; such a sheet would be provided for receiving an electrical current to thereby produce an electric field and cause a migration of ions of the ionized fluid away from the electrode sheet and into the skin or tissue of a person or animal against which the bioelectrode is placed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 122 words
A bioelectrode for iontophoretically delivering medicament into the skin or tissue of a person or animal comprising: a hydratable element for absorbing ionized medicament when placed in contact therewith, means for holding the hydratable element, an electrode mounted on the holding means in proximity to the hydratable element for receiving an electrical current to produce an electrical field and cause ionized medicament to move from the hydratable element into the skin or tissue on which the bioelectrode is placed, wherein said hydratable element comprises a stack of at least two horizontally positioned sheets of hydrogel for absorbing medicament interspaced with granules or fibers as means for maintaining adjacent sheets at least partially separated, and means for holding the sheets in the stack.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 122 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 1 wherein said sheets of hydrogel are formed to be relatively stiff.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 2 wherein said hydrogel sheets comprise a composition of a polymer and sugar.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 12 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 1 wherein said separating means are granules.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 4 wherein said granules comprise sugar crystals.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 37 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 1 wherein said separating means comprises granules or fibers spaced apart to form channel forming means disposed between each pair of adjacent sheets of hydrogel for allowing the flow of medicament therebetween.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 1 wherein said hydrotable element holding means comprises crimping together of corresponding edges on opposite sides of the sheets of hydrogel.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 1 wherein said hydrogel sheets are comprised of cross-linked polymer.

Dependent Claim 11 words
A bioelectrode as in claim 8 wherein said polymer is polyacrylamide.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 88 words
A rehydratable product for use in a bioelectrode wherein said rehydratable product contacts the skin or tissue of a person or animal on whom the bioelectrode is placed, comprising: a plurality of horizontally positioned sheets of hydrogel disposed together in a stack for absorbing a medication solution interspaced with granules or fibers as means for at least partially spacing apart adjacent sheets of hydrogel; and means for holding the sheets of hydrogel together in the stack; and wherein said sheets of hydrogel are formed with a stiffening agent.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 88 words
A rehydratable product for use in a bioelectrode wherein said rehydratable product contacts the skin or tissue of a person or animal on whom the bioelectrode is placed, comprising: a plurality of horizontally positioned sheets of hydrogel disposed together in a stack for absorbing a medication solution interspaced with granules or fibers as means for at least partially spacing apart adjacent sheets of hydrogel; and means for holding the sheets of hydrogel together in the stack; and wherein said sheets of hydrogel are formed with a stiffening agent.
Claim 14
