Abstract

Abstract PCT No. PCT/JP89/00635 Sec. 371 Date Feb. 27, 1991 Sec. 102(e) Date Feb. 27, 1991 PCT Filed Jun. 27, 1989 PCT Pub. No. WO91/00543 PCT Pub. Date Jan. 10, 1991.The present invention relates to a high performance nonlinear optical device by utilizing an optical medium of large second order nonlinear optical effects, which has acceptable processability and stability. The second-order nonlinear optical device of the present invention comprises an optical element of a monoclinic crystal of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-4'-nitrostilbene represented by the formula (I): <IMAGE> (I) said crystal belonging to space group P21, point group #4, said optical element having at least one substantially optically smooth surface.
