Claim 1
Independent Claim
84 words
A method of controlling the slow scan direction position at which a beam of light is focussed to a spot upon an image plane in an optical output system, comprising the steps of: directing a beam of light so as to be deflected by an electro-optical element; and applying an electrical bias to the electro-optic element such that the amount that the beam of light is deflected in the slow scan direction is varied to achieve slow scan direction position control of the spot.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
39 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the applied bias causes a change in the index of refraction of the electro-optic element, and the slow scan direction position control of the spot is achieved by varying said index of refraction.
Claim 4

34 words
The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of varying the electrical bias applied to the electro-optic element in response to predetermined correction data for correction of recurrent slow scan direction position error.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
172 words
A method of controlling the slow scan direction position of a light beam focused to a spot on an image plane in a raster output scanning apparatus, comprising the steps of: generating a light beam from a light source; modulating the light beam in response to an image data signal; passing the light beam through an electro-optical element disposed in the path of the light; focussing the light beam to form a spot of a desired size and shape on the image plane; scanning the spot in a raster fashion in a fast scan direction on the image plane; scanning the spot in a slow scan direction which is normal to the fast scan direction; determining the existence and extent of error in the slow scan direction position of the spot on the image plane; and correcting for any slow scan direction position error by varying the index of refraction of the electro-optic element by varying its electrical properties in response to the determination of the existence and extent of such error.
