Abstract
Abstract The cutting of such inorganic substances as ceramics and other materials that are hard to cut with a rotary sheet hone made of hone particles and a binder is accomplished by repeatedly varying the force of engagement of the rotary sheet hone with the workpiece between a released condition and a maximum value. Apparatus for carrying out this method includes hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders acting on the cutting element in opposite direction via a linkage so as to move the cutting element alternately into and out of engagement with the article to be cut.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim
93 words
A method of performing work on a workpiece employing a tool adapted to engage the workpiece, comprising the steps of oscillating the tool into and out of maximum engagement with the workpiece, said oscillation being performed so as to cause said tool to constantly reciprocate between a condition of less than disengagement and a condition of maximum engagement with said workpiece and thereby constantly varying the force at which said tool is urged in each direction to maintain said tool in engagement with said workpiece to provide a uniform cutting of the workpiece.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
93 words
A method of performing work on a workpiece employing a tool adapted to engage the workpiece, comprising the steps of oscillating the tool into and out of maximum engagement with the workpiece, said oscillation being performed so as to cause said tool to constantly reciprocate between a condition of less than disengagement and a condition of maximum engagement with said workpiece and thereby constantly varying the force at which said tool is urged in each direction to maintain said tool in engagement with said workpiece to provide a uniform cutting of the workpiece.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
29 words
The method according to claim 1, wherein the tool is a rotary cutting element, said method including the step of continuously rotating said cutting tool while reciprocating said tool.
