Abstract 2-Substituted para-aminophenols of general formula: <IMAGE> (I) where Y denotes oxygen or sulphur and R denotes a C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 hydroxyalkyl or C1-C6 haloalkyl or a C2-C6 polyhydroxyalkyl, provided that when Y=O, R is not methyl or ethyl and when Y=S, R is not ethyl; and dye composition containing one or more compounds of formula (I) where Y denotes an oxygen or sulphur atom and R is C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 hydroxyalkyl, C1-C6 haloalkyl or C2-C6 polyhydroxyalkyl.
